Our stunning 15th century free house is ready to welcome you for an authentic English inn experience: traditional ales and food, open fires, comfortable rooms and a friendly professional service.

The Abbot’s Fireside stands prominently in the centre of the ancient and picturesque village of Elham, nestled in Kent’s North Downs countryside between Folkestone and Canterbury.

Step back in time and enjoy the ambience of this ancient building. We take pride in creating a welcoming environment perfect for relaxation in comfort.

Whether you are local or visiting from further afield, you will enjoy great beers, and a good selection of wines and spirits. Stop for tea or coffee, enjoy a snack or a hearty meal. With seven guest rooms, why not stay a few days to enjoy this delightful rural part of Kent?

The unique interior décor is well suited to this building’s historic features and is the creation of its owner, Peter Malkin, who has been restoring ancient buildings for the past six decades.

Our bar & dining area

THE BEATING HEART OF OUR INN

The beating heart of our inn features the magnificent fireplace, which is just one of three open fires. The range of seating areas ensures you can linger at the bar, find a cosy corner for a few friends or tables for larger groups. What better way to end a walk in the stunning Elham Valley than relaxing by one of the fires to enjoy some refreshment?  Well-behaved four-legged friends are equally welcome in this dog-friendly inn.

Our food

At the Abbot’s Fireside you will find a great value pub menu, light bites and more substantial dishes to suit all appetites.

Our rooms

This may be an ancient building but the comfort in our seven en-suite rooms is most definitely 21st century! All rooms have views to the front of the inn and are the perfect resting place whether you’ve come to explore the area or are visiting friends.

And you will not leave hungry as a generous traditional or continental breakfast is included in the price of the room.

Our outdoor spaces

You can choose to sit on the terrace to the front of this iconic building, where tables and parasols ensure you can relax on a sunny day while watching the leisurely village world go by

Two further areas at the back, an intimate patio garden and a decked area, are perfect to enjoy a drink as the sun prepares to set on another perfect day.

Where to find us

Elham is at the heart of the Elham Valley, easily accessible and yet tranquil. It sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AoNB) with the historic city of Canterbury only 20 mins away.

The location of Elham close to the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone and the cross Channel ferries in Dover makes this an ideal stopping place if you are going or returning from continental Europe or planning a day trip to France.

This area of Kent is blessed with a rich history and diverse countryside. Our coastline, pretty villages, woodlands, castles, canals and marshes are all waiting to be explored.
